Periactin is an antihistamine, which is a drug used to relieve allergy symptoms. Periactin overdose occurs when someone intentionally or accidentally takes too much of this drug.

Symptoms of Periactin overdose may include:
- Agitation, nervousness, confusion, disorientation, hallucinations
- Coma (lack of responsiveness)
- Difficulty or inability to urinate
- Dilated pupils
- Dry mouth
- Flushed and dry skin (lack of sweating)
- Muscle spasms
- Rapid heartbeat
- Stomach cramps
- Tremors (shaking)

- Time it was swallowed
- Amount swallowed
- If the medicine was prescribed for the person

What to Expect at the Emergency Room
The health care provider will measure and monitor the person's vital signs, including temperature, pulse, breathing rate, and blood pressure. Symptoms will be treated as appropriate. The person may receive:
- Activated charcoal
- Airway support, including oxygen, breathing tube through the mouth (intubation), and breathing machine (ventilator)
- Blood and urine tests
- Chest x-ray
- ECG (electrocardiogram), or heart tracing
- Fluids through a vein (intravenous or IV)
- Medicines to treat symptoms
If the person lives the first 24 hours, survival is likely. People with an irregular heart rhythm and seizures are at highest risk for a serious outcome. Few people actually die from an antihistamine overdose.
